Another Boorish Kennedy Prattles On About Democracy

Today’s story, according to the New York Times, isn't that the Republican Party may have conspired to disenfranchise thousands of voters in the 2004 presidential election; the real story is that a Kennedy (pause for sharp intake of breath) thinks the GOP stole the presidency, and that this Kennedy has had the temerity to go public. By embracing a theory the punditocracy dismissed within days after the election as conspiracy, Robert Kennedy Jr. is labeled "another Kennedy living dangerously."

Never mind the clumsy, scattershot anecdotes author Mark Leibovich prays will magically coalesce into a cohesive portrait; what is more frustrating is watching a story about a political figure making hay about a political issue dumped in the Fashion & Style section. Like wearing white shoes after Labor Day, accusing the ruling party of manipulating the electoral process, I suppose, is simply in bad form.

Content to reject the idea of foul play in Ohio by citing a single error-ridden story on Salon.com, Leibovich characterizes Kennedy Jr.'s activism as "a penchant for risk taking," and as much as dares him to follow in his father and uncle's footsteps by asking, "At what point is he tempting fate?"

Give. Me. A break.

Dear "watcher": how about you give Kennedy a break? Or the millions of us who think there is plenty of evidence (being brushed aside) of electoral manipulation to outright fraud in Ohio in 2004?

I think RFK Jr. is showing guts. The political establishment (yes, Rs AND Ds) did not want to look into Ohio for a simple reason...it would have called into question perhaps a thousand other votes in America and made it clear that our present state of democracy is a SHAM.

Let's face it - incumbents like rigged elections, for the same reasons that corporations love monopolies. Funny how those two go together!

Neither one is truly American, and yet, our government has slowly become a pawn of non-competitive business (think Bechtel, Halliburton, big oil mergers, etc.) instead of a check on the process.

I don't care if you want to label Kennedy "boorish" but when you start to demean a man's attempts to defend (not "prattling on" about) democracy, then I get mad!

Um, Oregon Independent, perhaps you should read the post more closely. I think "Watcher" is taking the Times to task for its pathetic "profile" of Kennedy rather than addressing the very real issues he brings up in Rolling Stone. Your sarcasm meter's a little wonky.

The headline was indeed intended as sarcasm. I hope that a closer reading of the post will make clear that I was defending RFK Jr. from what I saw as a velvet-gloved (and rather vicious) attack from the New York Times.
